September Desktop Calendar

Hey hey! It’s Megan from I Teach. What’s Your Superpower? Happy fall, y’all!  That’s pushing it a little here in the Houston area.  Here’s our forecast for next week:

BUT, my little corner in the school is like the Arctic tundra, so I am definitely getting to layer up and play fall.  And that put me in the mood to make something beautiful and fallish.

There’s something about sitting down at the computer after a day of insanity and seeing something pretty waiting there to greet you.  It doesn’t make the crazy go away, but it does make me feel a better about it.

Here’s a little September beauty for your computer screen that I hope will give you a little peace in the middle of this wild and crazy back to school time!

These beautiful graphics are from Fishscraps.  You can visit her Etsy shop to see more of her art work.  When it’s this pretty, I don’t think you can call it clipart.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

Are you singing the song now?  Maybe have an uncontrollable urge to watch The Sound of Music?
It’s Megan from I Teach. What’s Your Superpower?  With the school year wrapping up (hallelujah!!!), I thought I’d share some of the things I loved using this year:

Hands down, #1.  This app from Junior Learning and the Touchtronic letters are AMAZING.  I enjoyed seeing the kids using them as much as they enjoyed learning with them.  You can read more about the app here.

I scooped these whisper phones up at the beginning of the school year for $2 each.  We used them allllllll year long.  Everyday.  All day.

These fluency passages from Stephanie at Falling into First.  We used these all year long.  This would be a great set to score during the sale.  Just saying.

National Geographic Explorer is so amazing.  The articles are well written, the photographs are amazing, and the magazine is great for teaching main idea and details, summarizing, nonfiction features, schema, pretty much anything you’d want to teach for non-fiction.  You can read what I wrote about them here.

I loved this bulletin board.  It made me happy all year long.  I pretty much (all the way) completely copied it from Rachel at The Tattooed Teacher.

What are some of your favorite things from this year?

Dear National Geographic, I Love You

Hey y’all! It’s Megan from I Teach. What’s Your Super Power? sharing one of my faaaaaavorite reading resources with you.
Isn’t it beautiful?  I started using National Geographic Explorer years ago with my second graders.  This is the classroom edition and not the regular kids edition.  I like it better than some of the other classroom magazines because it’s just articles.  That’s it.  Not little graphs stuck in, comics, random mini articles-just three good, solid articles.  That makes it perfect for reading groups.  And the photography is amazing.

I mean, look at these pictures.  What kid wouldn’t get sucked into these articles?
I order a set of 10 to use with my small groups (that’s the smallest number you can order).  I like them because I can use them differently with my small groups despite the differences in reading ability.  With my second grade friends, I give a lot more support.  We stop and discuss often and spend longer on an article.  With my third grade friends, we can get through an article more quickly and focus on some higher level comprehension skills.  I lead the discussion less and ask more open ended questions.

Each set comes with an extra copy for the teacher, a two sided poster, and an activity for each article.  There are great support resources online, too.  There’s an extensive teacher guide on the website and digital resources available for computers or iPads.

The best part is that the kids love them.  We are reading “Call of the Wildflowers” this week, and they’re already begging to read “Spinosaurs!” next week.  You couldn’t hope for a better response than that!

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

Hey hey everyone! It’s Megan from I Teach. What’s Your Super Power?  I’ve got a couple of easy Valentine’s Day treat ideas for you.

I love love love Valentine's Day in elementary school.  Love.  It's one of my favorite holidays by far.  A couple of years ago, I found this idea on a blog I follow.  It was a big hit (especially with my boys!)

How hysterical would this be:
on top of a treat bag with one of these in it:
Only $5.25 for 36 from Oriental Trading.  It's a steal. (It says 1 dozen, but look closely because there are three on a card.)  I mustache you to buy some.  I'll stop now.

I found some more super cute Valentine's Day ideas by searching on Pinterest, where else?

I'd recommend putting some Starburst or something similar in this one so all the bus drivers and custodians don't hate you.

Feeling inspired?  Here are some printables to use for your own Valentine’s treats.
So, stick some a treat (or a mustache-whatever) in one of these treat bags by Wilton and call it a day.  Michael's & Hobby Lobby have them:
Print out your tags, fold, staple, and you're ready for the big day! Now getting through the day, well, that’s a different story . . . .
