Show Us How You Use It {Aluminum Cans} - DIY Teacher Desk Organizer

Hi, Owl friends!  It's Dana from Prepping for the Primary Gridiron (as well as 3rd Grade Gridiron).
The other Owls and myself are teaming up again this week to bring you more ideas for "Show Us How You Use It!"

This week's linky is all about aluminum cans.

I wanted a new and cute way to organize all the teacher stuff on my desk, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money on an organizer.  So I gathered up my materials:

- cans
- spray paint
- ribbon
- hot glue gun/glue sticks

I spray painted my cans:

Once the cans dried, I added the ribbon using my hot glue gun:

After adding the ribbon to each can, I hot glued each can together.  This part was a little tricky, but I figured it out and made it work.  :)

Now I have a "Seuss-tastic" desk organizer!  I can organize all my Sharpies, pens, markers, and several other important "teachery" things - all in one place!

Two reasons I {heart} this project:

- you can use as many (or as few) cans as you want
- you can paint them to match your classroom theme

Now it's your turn!  How have you used aluminum cans in the classroom?  If you have a post to share, link up!  If not, feel free to leave your project idea in the comments!

  1. How do you make sure they don't have sharp edges??

    1. Good question! Maybe I would use fancy duct tape on the sharp edges or regular duct tape/electrical tape and spray over it.

    2. Kylee and Kate, I used the can opener to make sure all the sharp parts were pushed downward. Also, 99% of the items I'll put in the cans will be taller than the actual can. So far I haven't hurt myself! :)

  3. I crocheted a cover for my can! Then used it at my teacher table for pencils. I also covered an icing can and used it for a popsicle sticks math station.

  4. If you use a Pampered Chef can opener, it doesn't leave any sharp edges at all! I use cans at my writing table to hold all sorts of writing tools and my kids have never hurt themselves.

  5. The designs on the cans are so cute! This is a great way to make use of those used cans. And instead of buying office desk organizers, you could just create your own with your preferred design or color. Thank you for sharing this with us, Dana. Cheers!
