Tessa {Tales from Outside the Classroom}

Hey there!  I'm Tessa from Tales from Outside the Classroom.  I'm also the designer of this here blog.  I've been a teacher for 8 years, however, none of those years haven't been in a traditional teacher role.  I spent 3 years as a reading teacher K-5.  I then decided to expand my horizons and spent a year as a Differentiated Instruction coach.  Unfortunately, my grant was rescinded and I was on the hunt again.  I landed as a Primary Grades Team Leader.  I spent two years in that position and spent my days coaching the primary teachers and did evaluations and other administrative responsibilities.  This past year, I was the jack of all trades for the building but focused as the RtI Coordinator K-8.  So, essentially, I've spanned all 9 grades in those years, but primary is really my heart.

This year, I'm so excited to be going back to the building I was the DI coach at, and teaching 3rd grade.  I'm going to be teaching with one of my friends and it was a school that I enjoyed.  I've always enjoyed the primary grades, and while 3rd grade is at the tippy top, I love their independence.  I'm insanely excited to be starting this new venture and just as excited to be able to join in with these amazing bloggers to share our ideas and resources!

On a personal level I'm an almost 30 something {eeeeeeeek!}, single, uber busy, dork.  I rarely just sit around.  I always have to be going a million miles a minute- hence my blog, my stores, my design blog, oh and I'm super involved with a non-profit as well.  I swear I'm ADD and was never diagnosed, but I'm not a doctor so who knows!  I talk a million miles a minute and my brain operates even faster.  I love coffee, music, damask, and black and white.  And I am the mom to one fur giant fur baby (my boxer Tyson).

But that's enough about me!  I'm excited to share my newest freebie with you.  I've already been working hard on getting my classroom ready- even though it's still not cleaned and I can't work in it yet.  I found a poster at IKEA a while back that I LOVED.  It went along with my black and white theme and had some pops of primary colors.  It turns out that my classroom chairs will be green and yellow so I've just given into the fact that I'm just going to have some primary colors in there.  I wanted to use that poster to create a gallery wall of sorts.  I decided I wanted to use some of my favorite quotes from children's books.  Here's how my plan is going so far!
My photography skills are grossly lacking and things aren't quite as straight as my OCD mind would like but it's a start.  There will be lots of measuring twice before I hang these.

I created them all in 8"x10" and 5"x7".  The ratios are different on each so the layout is slightly different.  Also, PLEASE preview your image before you order it.  Some of them are very close and I had some of my 8x10s cut off (thankyounotsomuchCVS) even though the previews looked fine.  Thankfully they came out just fine when I ordered them through Walgreens via Snapfish.

Here's all 9 of them.  There are 4 that are vertical and 5 that are horizontal.  You can click on either picture to download the set.  The 5x7s are in a separate folder inside the zip folder.

I'd love to hear your favorite children's book quotes and how you use them in your classroom!

That's it for me today!  I can't wait to see what else these wonderful bloggers have in store for the next few days!  If you like today's post, feel free to stop by my blog and follow me on Bloglovin!

  12. These are great, Tess, thanks! I'm teaching summer school right now where there are quotes everywhere you look, even in the bathrooms! I'm also heading to Ikea later this week hoping to find some book boxes for daily 5. Happy upcoming BDay!

    1. Did you see the book boxes that I bought a while back? They aren't so durable but with bigger kids and a bit of tape reinforcement I think they'll work.

I need to head back in a couple weeks to get some bookshelves too!

And thanks for the birthday wishes! I'm trying to avoid it at all costs! Ha!

  17. Tessa,

This is my twentieth year of teaching, and my second year of teaching 3rd graders. I love this age group!

I'm so happy to have found your blog and look forward to finding new and fun things to do in 3rd grade.

Thank you for your hard work in creating and updating this blog.

Thank you for the children's quotes poster idea.

Is there any way you would be willing to share your multicolored chevron pattern? The one you use for this blog? I would like to use it as a frame for my childrens' quote posters instead of the black background.

  21. THank you for the darling quotes! I think I will make the smaller ones to hang over my desk in my Kindergarten classroom and make the bigger ones to hang in my sister's 5th thru 8th grade classroom.

  22. I absolutely LOVE the posters. I am a huge quote person and am always putting quotes around my classroom. I love the idea of framing them too!

    Thank you:)

Also -- congrats on a classroom teaching position. I taught mutli-age 2nd-5th graders in 1 classroom last year and my third grade kids were wonderful -- just on the verge of independence but still loving school and learning! I am moving to teach K-3 this year in another multi-age approach, so I will have third graders as my oldest this year, it will be interesting for sure.

Thank you again for the great freebie!

    Smiles,
    Courtney
